Overall, these figures give a clear indication that investment in railways and public transport in general is sustainable, and that the industry is becoming a more important contributor to a sustainable society.
Our role
In order to maintain this positive trend, it is essential that trains arrive when they are supposed to, that vehicles are reliable and that a high and ever improving level of safety is maintained. In a society where there is increasing pressure and demands for regularity at all levels, the industry must ensure that things move in the right direction.
Crucial factors behind this development are optimising maintenance and increasing our knowledge within digitisation and technical development. With a strong focus on innovation and technology, together with unique expertise and experience
of both vehicles and maintenance, Mantena can play a major role in this development. This is also emphasised in our vision of being “The Nordic region’s most innovative total maintenance service supplier”.
Our contribution
Our biggest contribution to a sustainable society is to provide good services to our customers in such a way that they underpin and support our customers’ strategies, goals and plans. In this picture, it is important to stress that Mantena must be a responsible operator which safeguards its employees’ rights and makes demands of its suppliers, while also establishing and monitoring its own climate targets to structure the work towards the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals6.
Mantena follows the Norwegian code of practice for corporate governance (The Norwegian Corporate Governance Board (NCGB/NUES)), and as part of the company’s strategy process, has established an overall plan for sustainable value creation; Norwegian Meld. St. 8 (2019-2020).
External environment
Mantena recognises that its business affects the environment, and is constantly working to improve the company’s environmental performance and reduce pollution by satisfying its own requirements, customer and regulatory requirements and relevant standards.
Mantena is certified according to NS-EN ISO 14001:2015, and is monitored through annual follow-up audits. Annual analyses of environmental aspects and identifying key environmental issues form the basis for the priority areas and the environmental programme.
Key areas for 2019 were:
• Chemicals handling and reduction in the number of
chemicals
• Disposal of waste, particularly hazardous waste
• Energy consumption
• Fuel consumption
• Handling of fluorinated greenhouse gases
Mantena’s operations use a number of chemicals, some of which can cause injury to personnel and damage to the environment if they are not handled in accordance with established procedures and requirements. The target of a five per cent reduction in the number of chemicals was not achieved.
The number of hazardous chemicals is a particular priority, and these have been significantly reduced over time. The company handles waste that can cause environmental damage if it is not dealt with properly. No incidents in the handling of hazardous waste in 2019. There were no discharges into the environment in 2019.
